MCP server for AI agents

AI coding agents install packages from memory, and their memory is often a year old. Connect DefaultRank's MCP server and your agent can check npm's current versions before it installs anything, and look up which developer tools AI models actually pick.

Server URL (Streamable HTTP):

https://defaultrank.com/mcp

Set it up

Claude Code

claude mcp add --transport http defaultrank https://defaultrank.com/mcp

Claude (claude.ai and desktop app)

Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector, then paste the server URL above.

Cursor

Add to ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "defaultrank": { "url": "https://defaultrank.com/mcp" }
  }
}

VS Code

Add to .vscode/mcp.json:

{
  "servers": {
    "defaultrank": { "type": "http", "url": "https://defaultrank.com/mcp" }
  }
}

Any other client that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP works the same way.

Tools

check_package_freshness

Takes dependencies as in package.json and checks each one against the npm registry at that moment. It returns packages that are a major version or more behind, deprecated packages, and the major version to use instead. The same check is available as a web page: package.json freshness check.

Try asking your agent: “Before you install anything, check these dependencies with DefaultRank.”

get_tool_pick_rate

For a developer tool (a product name like “Clerk” or an npm package like @supabase/supabase-js), returns how often 6 AI models recommend it first, mention it, and use it in apps they build. Same data as the free check.

get_category_ranking

Ranks the tools AI models recommend and install for auth, databases or email, from the latest monthly report.

Limits and privacy

  • All tools are read-only. There is no sign-in, and nothing you send is stored.
  • Up to 60 requests per minute per client, and up to 60 packages per freshness check.
  • To check freshness, our server sends the package names (not versions or your code) to the public npm registry.
  • We log which tool was called and the country, never the arguments or your IP address. See the privacy policy.

Pick-rate figures come from our monthly measurement; see the methodology for how they are produced.
